LIP FILLER AFTERCARE – 10 MISTAKES TO AVOID
By Shetha Naji, Consultant Plastic Surgeon – September 30, 2025
Lip fillers are one of the most popular aesthetic treatments, but what you do afterwards can make all the difference. Today I’m sharing the 10 most common mistakes patients make after lip fillers – and how to avoid them.
Even with the best techniques, poor aftercare can affect how your results settle, how quickly you heal, and whether your lips stay symmetrical and natural. Good aftercare reduces anxiety and complications.
NUMBER 1. Avoid touching, pressing, or massaging your lips unless your injector specifically advises it.
NUMBER 2. Skip strenuous activity for 24–48 hours. It can worsen bruising and swelling.
NUMBER 3. Skip the heat! No saunas, steam rooms, or sunbathing for a few days. Heat can increase swelling.
NUMBER 4. Avoid alcohol and blood thinners unless prescribed – they may increase bruising.
NUMBER 5. Be careful eating & drinking. Stick to soft foods. Avoid very hot drinks, spicy food, and straws for 24 hours.
NUMBER 6. Skip lip makeup for 24 hours. It reduces infection risk.
NUMBER 7. Avoid kissing/intimacy! Hold off kissing or close lip contact for 24–48 hours. It prevents pressure and bacteria. Sorry!
NUMBER 8. Delay other treatments. Wait 1–2 weeks before facials, dental work, or skin treatments near your lips.
NUMBER 9. Don’t panic over swelling. Mild swelling or asymmetry is normal at first. It usually settles within a few days.
AND NUMBER 10. Don’t ignore red flags. If you experience severe pain, blanching, or unusual colour changes, contact your practitioner immediately. If in doubt, get it checked out!
Lip fillers can give beautiful, natural results – but aftercare is just as important as the treatment itself. Follow these tips, and you’ll heal safely and confidently.
