HOW MENOPAUSE AFFECTS YOUR SKIN (AND WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT)
By Shetha Naji, Consultant Plastic Surgeon – September 15, 2025
Menopause is a natural stage of life that every woman will go through, whether it’s happening now, years ahead, or already part of your past. Yet, despite being such a universal experience, the effects of menopause—particularly on our skin—are still rarely discussed.
We often hear about hot flushes, night sweats, and mood changes. But what about our skin, the body’s largest organ? Changes in skin during perimenopause and menopause can have a significant impact on our confidence, comfort, and overall wellbeing—and they deserve just as much attention.
In this article, I’ll explain how menopause affects your skin, why these changes happen, and what you can do to help your skin look and feel its best.
COMMON SKIN CHANGES DURING MENOPAUSE
Research shows that skin collagen can decrease by up to 30% in the first five years after menopause. This loss of collagen (alongside other factors such as sun exposure and natural aging) contributes to noticeable changes such as:
• Dryness and sensitivity – skin may feel rough, itchy, or less hydrated.
• Loss of elasticity and firmness – leading to sagging or looser skin.
• More visible lines and wrinkles – as collagen and elastin production slow.
• Thinner skin – owing largely to loss of collagen.
A 2018 French study of over 1,200 women found that 72% noticed changes in their skin after menopause, yet half felt they had not been given enough information. Another survey by the British Skin Foundation reported that 85% of women experience skin changes during menopause, but nearly a quarter felt embarrassed to discuss it.
These statistics highlight just how common menopausal skin changes are—and how rarely they’re openly discussed.
WHY DOES MENOPAUSE AFFECT THE SKIN?
The main reason is falling oestrogen levels, which play a key role in maintaining skin hydration, thickness, and elasticity. Less oestrogen means:
• Reduced collagen and elastin production.
• Less hyaluronic acid, which normally helps skin stay plump and moisturised.
• Slower skin cell turnover, leading to dullness.
It’s important to note, however, that not every skin change is caused by menopause. Sun exposure (photodamage), smoking, stress, and lifestyle factors can also contribute. That is why a holistic approach always works best when caring for your skin.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: SKIN SOLUTIONS FOR MENOPAUSE
The good news? There are many ways to improve menopausal skin—both at home and in clinic. You don’t have to simply accept these changes.
AT-HOME CARE
• Daily SPF: Sun protection remains the best anti-ageing tool.
• Hydrating skincare: Look for moisturisers with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or glycerin.
• Gentle cleansers: Avoid harsh cleansers that may strip natural oils.
• Retinoids (Vitamin A derivatives): Encourage collagen production and smooth texture.
• Healthy lifestyle: Stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet, consider supplements, exercise regularly, including strength/weight training, minimise stress where you can and prioritise sleep.
IN-CLINIC TREATMENTS
Depending on your needs, treatments may include:
• Skincare tailored to menopausal skin.
• Chemical peels for smoother, brighter skin.
• Injectables (skin boosters, polynucleotides, fillers) to restore volume and hydration and improve skin health.
• Microneedling for improved skin texture and firmness.
• Laser or light therapies to boost collagen.
• Sofwave to stimulate collagen production, lift and tighten
PHARMACOLOGY
Depending on your signs and symptoms, hormone replacement therapy may be advised. It is always best to talk to your GP practice. At-home care and in-clinic treatments are always an adjunct and not a replacement for hormonal deficiency.
WHY TALKING MATTERS
As a doctor and Consultant Plastic Surgeon, I often see patients who feel unsure whether skin changes are “important enough” to mention. But if something affects your confidence or quality of life, it matters.
I believe knowledge is power. By talking openly about menopause and skin health, we can empower women to feel informed, supported, and proactive. There are many safe, effective options available—you don’t have to go through this alone.
