EXOSOMES

WHAT ARE THEY?
Exosomes are naturally occurring vesicles released from cells, carrying molecules for intercellular communication. In skincare, exosomes, which may be derived from numerous sources, are used to carry bioactive molecules in addition to nutrients, in order to communicate between cells and stimulate skin regeneration. This results in cellular regeneration, improved wound healing, reduced inflammation and reduction in oxidative stress, leading to improved skin rejuvenation.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Exosomes are used to stimulate targeted cellular functions, such as fibroblast activity, to increase migration, proliferation and collagen production, in order to improve skin quality and rejuvenation. Additionally, exosomes reduce tyrosinase, melanin and oxidative stress, resulting in the reduction of hyperpigmentation and increased skin brightening, improving one’s overall complexion.

WHAT IS IT USED FOR?
Exosomes are used in conjunction with devices, in order to achieve delivery into the skin. They are used to improve skin quality by reducing fine lines and rhytids (wrinkles), improving skin rejuvenation leading to more plump, firmer skin and reducing hyperpigmentation to even and brighten your complexion. Due to their mechanism of action, they may be used to improve hair growth and follicle/scalp health and scar remodelling. Exosomes are proven to significantly amplify the results of cosmetic procedures, such as microneedling.

IS IT SAFE?
Exosomes are suitable for all skin types and although their use in skincare is relatively new, they have a good safety profile.

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE DAY?
You will meet our plastic surgery consultant, Miss Shetha Naji, for a face-to-face consultation. You will have a full medical and aesthetic consultation detailing your desires and concerns, and following a thorough and systematic assessment, a treatment plan will be devised. This will include a detailed explanation of the procedure itself, associated risks and aftercare. There is no obligation to undertake any treatment.

If you wish to proceed, the treatment, which is used in conjunction with microneedling, will typically last no longer than 30 minutes. Local anaesthetic (topical) is used prior to the treatment. Most patients describe the sensation from the microneedling as light pressure or mild buzzing. The exosomes are used topically during and after the microneedling.

Detailed aftercare advice is given following the procedure. Your skin will appear red, and possibly swollen for up to five days, but typically these subside within 48 hours and is owing to the microneedling, not use of exosomes. Sun exposure should be avoided until your skin is healed, similar to a mild sunburn. Use of exosomes have been proven to reduce the downtime associated with the delivery method; ie the microneedling.

We do advise against having any aesthetic treatments immediately prior to any formal or significant event.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?
Comparative studies of microneedling vs microneedling with exosome use show the results are superior with the concomitant use of exosomes. The improvement in fine lines, rhytids and texture, take several weeks due to their cellular effects, but are faster than with microneedling alone. Results are seen within a few weeks.
