MICRONEEDLING

WHAT IS IT?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive method by which fine needles are used to create evenly spaced, tiny punctures within the skin. This stimulates the skin’s natural healing process, increasing collagen and elastin production, leading to improved skin quality, texture, tone and elasticity.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Microneedling creates uniformly spaced microchannels within the skin. Through adjustment of the needle penetration depth, different levels of the skin can be reached. The controlled microinjuries trigger the healing process, which involves stimulation of fibroblasts. These fibroblasts increase production of collagen and elastin, resulting in improved skin firmness, elasticity and plumpness, yielding a natural, youthful result.

WHAT IS IT USED FOR?
Microneedling is a regenerative medical treatment, causing the skin’s healing process to improve skin quality, texture, tone and elasticity. It is commonly used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring and skin pigmentation. It may be used in conjunction with other regenerative skin treatment modalities and targeted skin care. Dyschromia (pigmentation conditions) indications include melasma, vitiligo, sun damage or ‘age’ spots. While most commonly used on the face, microneedling may be used on any cutaneous skin area.

IS IT SAFE?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure with a good safety profile. As it does cause a controlled skin insult, select patient groups may not be suitable for this procedure.

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE DAY?
You will meet our plastic surgery consultant, Miss Shetha Naji, for a face-to-face consultation. You will have a full medical and aesthetic consultation detailing your desires and concerns, and following a thorough and systematic assessment, a treatment plan will be devised.

This will include a detailed explanation of the procedure itself, associated risks and aftercare. There is no obligation to undertake any treatment.

If you wish to proceed, the treatment will typically last no longer than 30 minutes. Local anaesthetic (topical) is used prior to the treatment. Most patients describe the sensation as light pressure or mild buzzing.

Detailed aftercare advice is given following the procedure. Your skin will appear red and possibly, swollen for up to five days, but typically, these subside within 48 hours. Sun exposure should be avoided until your skin is healed, similar to a mild sunburn.

We do advise against having any aesthetic treatments immediately prior to any formal or significant event.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?
Typically, an initial course of up to six treatments, performed four weeks apart, are advised to achieve a full result. Results are typically seen after the fourth treatment but may continue to improve for 3-6 months. We recommend a six month review, with maintenance treatments to sustain optimal results.

HOW LONG WILL RESULTS LAST?
Everyone is individual and results therefore vary. Depending on the indication, treatment and skin care management, results may last up to six months.
